Steve Galanits

Steve Galanits, 90, of Castle Rock, formerly of Waterloo, passed away on Saturday, August 27th at his son’s home in Castle Rock, Colorado. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 25th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, with a brief program at 4:30 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. Refreshments will follow services in the church Social Hall. A private inurnment will take place privately, at a later date. Memorials are to be directed to the family. Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories in Waterloo, is assisting with local arrangements.

Steve Istvan Galanits was born on Sept 14, 1931, in Hugyag, Hungary, to his parents Béla and Rozàlia (Györi) Galanits. In Steve’s younger years, he excelled at math and was one of a select few to attend a university in Hungary where he received a Master’s degree equivalent in accounting. Steve escaped from Hungary in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution to a refugee camp in Austria. He turned down an offer to play professional soccer for the German team, for his dream to come to the United States. He taught himself English, and arrived in the US in 1959, where he received sponsorship to remain in the states.

Steve married Shirley Peterson in Duluth, Minnesota on December 29, 1962. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids, then Minneapolis, before settling in Waterloo.

Steve was a manager of a shoe store in Duluth. He was later hired at Sears where he was the manager in the shoe department, then a salesman in both the tool department and the Suburban shop. He retired from Sears after 29 years. He went on to work at the Black Hawk County Courthouse as a court attendant where he retired a second time, after 7 years. He was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Waterloo.

In his free time, Steve loved to watch soccer and the news, loved to play cards and was a math whiz. He was always wanting to learn, and read constantly; through much of his reading, Steve became handy and enjoyed fixing and building things. Throughout the years, Steve and Shirley visited Hungary many times, where they were able to get together with beloved family. Some would say Steve was stubborn and resilient due to his childhood in Hungary but anyone that knew Steve, knew that he was generous and would help anyone; he knew many people and always enjoyed talking to everyone. He was a devoted family man and loved to spoil his grandkids. Steve will be greatly missed by his friends and family that he leaves behind.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley; his parents; his brothers Béla and Sàndor and their wives; his brother-in-law Richard Peterson. Steve is survived by his 4 sons John, Richard, David (Terri), and James (Michelle) Galanits; 6 grandchildren Logan, Whitney, Nicole, Kayla, Jonah, and McKenna; 5 great-grandchildren; 3 nieces; his sister-in-law, Joanne Peterson.
