Karen Kae Walker was born in Waterloo, Iowa on July 18, 1942, daughter of Truman and Alice (Peterson) Johnson. She was raised and attended schools in Waterloo graduating with the East High School Class of 1960. Following graduation, Karen attended Pitze’s for cosmetology training and opened her own salon, the Hair Affair, in Waterloo. She brought a lot of entertainment and joy to people throughout the Cedar Valley at her Karaoke Lounges, Club Wannabes and The Night Gallery. Mayor Roof bestowed an award to Karen for being an Outstanding Business Owner in the Cedar Valley because her businesses attracted an upstanding and classy clientele to the area. Known as “Boss Lady” Karen was a hard worker and social butterfly who loved to tell stories – and she had many great tales. She was a great match-maker and several couples made it to the altar after she set them up. Karen enjoyed singing, playing cards and going to the casinos. She would play mind games and do puzzles to keep her mind sharp and was a wiz at trivia games. Most of all, Karen loved her family and they were the pride and joy of her life.

Karen passed away at the age of 75 years on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Barbara Freet. Karen is survived by her daughter, Karri (Brian) Downs of Evansdale; her son, Kasey Walker of Murfreesboro, TN; 4 grandchildren: Tyler, Jordan, Kassidy and Evan; 2 great-grandchildren: Raynah and Zane; her sister, Carmen Card of Cedar Rapids; and her best friend, Barb Laue of Waterloo.
