Gwendolyn “Gwen” Ann Overmann

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Ann Overmann, 64, passed away peacefully May 28th, 2022 at home after a battle with COPD.

Gwen Overmann was born on April 14th, 1958 in Iowa City, Iowa at UIHC to Harry and Delores (Watt) Rudisill. Gwen grew up in rural Alta, Iowa with her four siblings: Arlene, Marge, Sheryl, and Lonnie. She graduated from Alta High School with the class of 1976. After graduation Gwen moved to Council Bluffs, IA/Omaha, NE area where she met her first husband, Leo Milota in October of 1978. Together they would move to Storm Lake, IA and Gwen would work at the local turkey plant alongside Leo. She and Leo got married in April 1980 in Truesdale, IA. After they were married they returned to the Omaha, NE area where they lived until the summer of 1993. On September 1st, 1982 they welcomed a daughter, Samantha Elizabeth. While living in Omaha, Gwen worked as a housekeeper for several area hotel chains, the longest being at Embassy Suites Hotel until she moved in 1993. Gwen enjoyed going to the thrift stores in South Omaha, and hanging out with friends. In 1993, Gwen and her family moved to Iowa living in Belle Plaine and then Victor. She worked for eight years as a housekeeper at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Gwen was an excellent housekeeper and had a knack for keeping things organized and tidy and would even clean on her days off of work at her home for relaxation. She and Leo remained married until Leo’s passing in April of 1997.

In October of 2001 Gwen met Jim Overmann. They got married in Marengo, IA at the United Methodist Church on February 2, 2002, and with this union Gwen gained a step-son Matt. After they got married, Gwen moved to Evansdale, IA. During her time in Evansdale, Gwen worked as a housekeeper for Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, and La Porte City Nursing and Rehab. Gwen and Jim loved to travel and camp. They usually went on a yearly trip in September and went to the Dakotas, Missouri, Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and Kentucky. She would collect magnets from each destination she went to, eventually collecting well over 100 magnets. Besides traveling, in her free time Gwen enjoyed working on puzzle books, working in her flower beds, decorating her yard with ornaments, reading books, especially Stephen King novels, going to flea markets, thrift stores, and antique stores, and also collecting McCoy Pottery. Gwen loved hanging out with family and friends, especially her grandsons.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jim; daughter, Samantha (Heath) Van Zee; step-son, Matt (Sandy) Overmann; 5 grandsons, Jacob, Zach, and Abraham Overmann, and Landon and Levi Van Zee; her sisters, Marge Rudisill and Sheryl Spears (Roger); a brother, Lonnie Rudisill and brother in laws, John, Mike, and Marty Overmann. She is also survived by her Aunt Loraine, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by twin brothers in infancy, her mother Delores, her grandmother and grandfather Bud and Ora Watt; father, Harry Rudisill; first husband, Leo Milota; sister, Arlene Stewart, a few aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Per Gwen’s wishes she was cremated and will be inurned at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids alongside her first husband Leo.

Celebration of Life Services will be on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be held an hour before at 1:00 PM. Memorials may be directed to the family. Gwen’s family would like to thank her medical team at Allen Hospital and Unity Point Hospice.
