Darla J. Romer
Darla Jean Walters was born August 11, 1949 in Waterloo, Iowa, daughter of Robert and Iris Abbott Walters. She grew up in Waterloo with her parents and siblings. As a small child, she attended the Maywood Wesleyan Church where she later accepted the Lord as her Savior. On August 13, 1966 she married Robert Walther and moved to Denver, Iowa. They had two daughters, Fonda and Cynthia. Later, she divorced Robert and moved back to Waterloo. On December 11, 1987, she married Willard “Bill” Romer. She died peacefully at home on February 24, 2021 at age 71.
Darla proudly earned her GED and later earned a degree in Civil Engineering from Hawkeye Institute of Technology. She had a great work ethic and held several jobs over the years. She enjoyed most being the head of security at the Waterloo Airport. Darla loved all animals, but especially enjoyed kittens. She was sensitive to any unfair treatment of animals and people alike. She was especially grateful to veterans and service personnel and never hesitated to thank anyone she saw in uniform. Above all, she was very protective of her family, cared for them deeply, and was very proud of their achievements in life.
Darla is survived by her husband; her brother Bruce (Carol) Walters of Waterloo; her children, Fonda (Matt) Foster of Evansdale, and Cynthia (Mike) Stevens of Cedar Falls; her granddaughter, Jessica Owen and great-grandchildren, Zaydyn, Kirriella and Azariana of Evansdale; her step-grandsons Joseph Foster and Jacob Foster, both of Waterloo; the family cat Max and granddog Ernie; and nieces, nephews and an abundant extended family.
Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers Robert Walters and Larry Walters; sisters Frances Diggins, Patricia Cline, and Janet Halverson; a nephew Rusty Diggins; a niece Debra Walters, and her beloved dog Sandy who was her constant companion.
A family lead Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, March 2nd at 6:00 p.m. at Crossroads Community Church of the Nazarene where she attended. The church is located at 3622 Hammond Avenue, Waterloo, Iowa.
