Jack Royce Bickel was born November 20, 1929, in Watertown, SD, son of Everett and Neola (Helphrey) Bickel. He graduated from Des Moines East High School with the Class of 1948. Jack worked as a cement constructor and as a machinist at John Deere for 25 years before retiring in 1991. He married Marjorie Polley in 1949 and she passed away in 1994. Jack was married to Veronica Westphal on March 9, 1996. He enjoyed bowling, card games and playing marbles. Jack was a quiet and faithful man, loving husband and father.

Jack passed away at NewAldaya Lifescapes on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at the age of 89 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Rebecca Urban; 3 brothers: Darrell “Pete” (Marilyn) Bickel, Jerry Bickel and Jay Bickel; 2 sisters, Darlene Hall and Wanda Tilton; and his beloved dog, Molly. Jack is survived by his wife of nearly 24 years, Veronica; his children: Sandra Sue (Ron) Hansen of Waterloo, Joe (Janice) Waleski of Reinbeck, and Hope (Brian) Harris of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren: Brenda, Sarah, Mark, Wade, Brett, Sam, Alex, Will, Lee, Anne, Ria, Alex, Holly, Tony and Wendy; many great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Marvin (Jan) Bickel of Arizona; five sisters: LaVonne Melton of Arizona, Gail (Ralph) Cox of Minnesota, Karen (Keith) Bohning of Des Moines, Marilyn (Warren) Wolfe of Arizona, and Vickie (Gary) Bontrager of Indiana; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Bickel of Arvada, CO and Linda Bickel of Waterloo.
