Gerald “Joe” Bowers

Gerald “Joe” Bowers was born on November 29, 1921, in Marshalltown, the son of Bill and Violet (Holden) Bowers. Joe graduated from Waterloo West High School. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. On June 7, 1942, Joe was united in marriage to Betty Wilcox. The couple made their home in Waterloo. Joe was a self-employed home builder in Waterloo his entire career until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and the Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion. He was very active at Friendship Village for many years and enjoyed fishing and traveling. Joe died at the age of 97 on July 23, 2019, at Friendship Village. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Max Bowers; and two sisters, Betty Sue Garber and Carrie Miller. Joe is survived by two sons, Ron (Dee) Bowers of Waterloo and Dick (Connie) Bowers of Mukwonago, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Tracy, Terri, Tonya, and Brenda; eight great grandchildren, Tracy Jr, Tristen, Brittney, Dustin, Heather, Alex, Trent, and Alleigh; and five great great grandchildren.

The burial will be at Garden of Memories Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion. Please direct memorials to Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion.
